We will explore the history of Japan in 1853-1945, focusing on Japan's wars of imperialism agains China and Russia, the taking and managing of colonies and occupied territories in Taiwan, Korea, and Manchuria, war and atrocities in China, and the Pacific War against the United States and United Kingdom. We will discuss the causes of imperialism and war, and how those events continue to reverberate today.
There will be weekly writing assignments and quizzes about the readings, and one oral/written report.
