This course is designed to give students the opportunity to analyze the organization of written English discourse above the sentence or clause level. Samples of written English texts will be used as the basis for analysis. Some of the issues that will be covered in this course include textual cohesion, discourse coherence, and discourse genre analysis. Fundamentally, the analysis of written discourse enables us to trace and understand the different textual patterns and lexical/grammatical features employed by writers and readers to produce and make sense of stretches of communication in a coherent and meaningful manner.
