Modern Japanese History: Japanese Empire and Militarism, 1910-1936
This semester we will examine Japanese foreign policy, colonial policy and the colonized peoples in the 1910-1936 period, particularly examining Japan’s actions in Okinawa, Korea, Taiwan, and Manchuria. We will be looking at resistance and cooperation, colonial economies, education, and modernization in each colony and occupied area. We will also look at aspects of the Japanese political system and military that led to militarization and war in China in 1937.
