Participants of this course will obtain an overview
of legal frameworks and policy making to protect cultural heritage on international
level. This course covers five Conventions adopted by UNESCO and one Convention
by UNIDROIT. On the other hand, the protection of cultural heritage has
traditionally been a national subject matter of each state, reflecting sovereign
aspect of cultural identity. In addition, since decisions of the governing
bodies of each Convention play an important role as a “binding case law”, they
will be referred to in relation to concrete cases.
