This course consists of a systematic introduction to literary Japanese (文語) grammar, facilitated by homework, drills, tests, and reading and translating primary texts. To prepare students to navigate the diverse terrain of premodern Japanese texts, we will also cover the basics of reading literary Sinitic (漢文), cursive script (くずし字), and non-standard kana (hentaigana 変体仮名). At the end of the term, students will complete a translation and grammatical analysis of a portion of a primary text (approximately 600–1,000 characters in length).
